Events for all the family can be found around Dorset throughout the calendar year.
The Tolpuddle Martyrs were a group of six Dorset men from the village of Tolpuddle near Dorchester. They made a major impact in the field of worker's rights.
The Tolpuddle Martyr's Festival is a three day festival held at the end of July every year. Many thousands of people come to this small Dorset village to remember the sacrifice of the six farm labourers that in effect launched Trade Unionism in this country. Tolpuddle has become a place of pilgrimage for trade unionists and socialists ever since.
The Festival itself is a mixture of speeches, political discussion, songs and wreath laying along with the grand procession of banners to the Methodist chapel at the eastern end of the village. There is entertainment provided for all the family with a music stage.
The Great Dorset Steam Fair is possibly the summer family event in Dorset. Taking place at the end of August/beginning of September each year, the event represents an excellent way for the family to round off their summer holidays with a feast of attractions, things to do, and, for the older generation a chance to reminisce on the past.
Dorset County Show is the South West's largest two day agricultural show. It has been running for almost 170 years now and seems to just get better and better. The show is held at the Dorchester Showground, near the Kingston Maurward roundabout, and just about a mile from Dorchester town centre. Usually taking place in September, the Show is open from 8:30am to 6:00 pm daily and hosts almost 60,000 visitors over its two days, with something for everyone.
