Weymouth Main

Weymouth Main beach, Dorset

Weymouth's main beach consists of fine sand with shingle and pebbles at the northern end. It stretches for almost a mile and ranges in width from an average of about 40 metres to 150 metres.

Backed by a largely Georgian seafront, the beach lies adjacent to the town centre and harbour. Weymouth is quite rightly renowned for its award winning beach, which provides a unique and all round visitor experience.

The beach offers a wide range of facilities with nearby car parks, toilets, disabled access, deckchair and watersports equipment hire, amusements, shower facilities, seasonal Lifeguard cover and Tourist Information Office. There is an on-site café and an area for picnics.

Weymouth Pier lies at the southern end of the beach, and includes the Pavilion Theatre and Weymouth Sea Life Tower. The section seaward of the Weymouth Community Hospital is known as Greenhill Beach whilst further to the northeast near the Lodmoor Country Park the beach is known as Preston Beach or Weymouth Lodmoor. Beyond that lies Furzy Cliff and Bowleaze Cove, also known as Overcombe Beach.

Swimmers, bathers and other water users benefit from the sheltered bay and gradually sloping seabed, which gives shallow, inshore waters.

A seasonal dog ban applies here with No dogs permitted on the beach between 1st May and 30th September inclusive.
