Avon beach lies just just to the southwest of Friar's Cliff at Christchurch in East Dorset. The sand and shingle beach is an ideal spot for a family trip to the seaside, offering a safe gentle slope into the sea. Sand bars often appear depending on the tide movements.
The beach is a typical south coast beach in that it is regularly cut by wooden groynes attempting to reduce erosion by longshore drift.
Avon Beach is backed by a long line of beacch huts and is lifeguarded in high season. Other facilities include canoe hire, shops and a café. Activities locally include swimming, jet skiing and crab fishing especially at Mudeford Quay half a mile to the southwest.
There is also a good sized car park with spaces for 200 cars.
A seasonal dog ban is in force here, with dogs banned from 1st May to 30th September inclusive. However, dogs are allowed at Mudeford Quay all year round.
