The Lyric Theatre is a very special old building. Built as an Independent Chapel in 1746, it has been a Temperance Hall, the Liberal Hall and was the original Electric Palace Cinema. It was listed in 1950 and was used as the Bernard Gale School of Dancing for many years. From ballet to salsa and pantomimes galore, Bernard taught hundreds of pupils in his time here until 2002 when he passed away leaving a great legacy of dance in the town.
Having re-opened in September 2010, the Lyric Theatre exists not only as a base for Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company but also provides a facility for established and up and coming artists to create and showcase their work.
Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company is housed in the building. Our productions are made here and there is a puppet laboratory upstairs where new puppets are born!
We make family friendly shows including The Little Red Hen, The Elves & The Shoemaker, The Hare & The Tortoise, The 3 Little Pigs and The Enormous Turnip (you might have spotted our Enormous Turnip Caravan pootling around the streets of Bridport!).
We don't have a seasonal programme like many venues, but instead we have special events once or twice a month, a variety of classes and our hugely popular puppet club for budding puppet makers/puppeteers ranging in age from 7 to 60.
