Cerne Abbas Giant

The Cerne Abbas giant, also rknown as the Rude Man, is a 180ft (55m) high figure of a naked man cut into the chalk hillside near the village of Cerne Abbas, just north of Dorchester. The giant holds a knobbled club 120 ft long in his right hand.

The age of the giant is unknown as is its purpose, some historians identify it as a Celtic British figure, others claim it to be much more recent as the first descriptions of the figure do not appear until the middle of the 18th century. The Cerne Abbas Giant is an important part of local culture and folklore, which often associates it with fertility, and is well worth a visit.
